Roll up! Roll up! The Circus is in town!

Dame Gertie Dollop runs the show with her son, Silly Billy but they have fallen on hard times particularly with the dastardly Ringmaster Heinkel, owner of the rival 'Circus of Horrors' up to his devious old tricks. Goldilocks dreams of running away with the circus but her father the debt-collecting Baron Wasteland won't allow it and demands the overdue pitch fees from Gertie and Billy.
They need a miracle however after their honeypot full of money is taken taken in the middle of the night by three porridge hungry, talking bears. Could they be the new star attraction Dame Gertie has been searching for? And can Mystic Shane with his magical 8 ball see a future for the Circus and save the day?

It’s every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

Join us for an evening of mayhem with Lurch, Fester, Pugsley and the whole family and see if Wednesday can keep the secret and have One Normal Night!

Living with his old mother Dame Crusoe, his washed up father, Captain Crusoe and his silly billy brother Sprat, Robinson has no desire to take over the family Fish ‘n Chip shop. Meanwhile, the high seas are terrorised by the evil Captain Blacktashe in his search for the treasure but the map where X marks the spot has been lost for years… Will Robinson ever find the treasure? Will Dame Crusoe end up battered? And what is that mysterious writing on the back of the chip shop menu?

The piece combines elements of physical theatre, original compositions of electronic soundscape, and an original text based on the stylistic conventions of Irish playwright, Mark O'Rowe. Students involved include HND Performing Arts Year 1 and L3 Music Technology Year 2.
The School of Music and Performing Arts prides itself in introducing students, of both disciplines, to exploring new ways of creating original works.
The works and musings of Ed Ruscha were used as a starting block, from which concepts and ideas were explored and refined. Of particular interest was the 1968 photographic study entitled: Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass…possibly suggesting peril amidst paradise.

SERC SPACE had the honour of hosting this year's Music Skills NI competition, where all 5 colleges in Northern Ireland battled it out for places in the national finals. Thanks to everyone who took part and performed on the day. Every category was extremely close and all the students were a credit to their colleges, plus the craic was mighty!
A special thanks must go to the technical crews who worked hard all day to make it a success, the Eauthor team for filming and streaming the entire event live on YouTube, all the lovely sponsors for providing the prizes, and Steven Rainey as the excellent compere who held the whole thing together. Well done everyone!

New PACTIC Building Finally Announced

After 10 years in the planning, the new Performing Arts and Technology Innovation Centre has just been given the green light by the DEL Minister Dr Stephen Farry. The £12 million development, set to open in 2015, will also be the new home of SERC-MAPA and feature a 300 seater theatre, dance studio, black box theatre, 2 recording studios, 5 practice rooms and classrooms.

Renovations of the Studios, Practicerooms and Central Hall are all on target and looking well for reopening after Easter.
The college is spending £400,000 on a make over for the main music and performing arts rooms and one of the first recordings in the new studio will be the latest episode of Live@SERC MAPA featuring the winner of the Kickstart competition run by the lovely people at Chordblossom.

As you may have noticed SERC-MAPA.ORG has gone through a makeover recently with a faster loading site that's more suitable for mobile phones. If you are looking for something on the old site, you can still access it HERE until 1/6/12 when it will cease to exist. This includes all the old photo galleries so if there are any images you want, get them soon! Stuff will be getting transferred over for the next few weeks to the archives but if there's something you can't find, just ask. Likewise if you come across any bugs glitches or mistakes please give me a shout.
